August / September 2003

At our July meeting the Silent Tribute and Exhortation were led by our Chairman, Bob Jennings, who also gave a report on the recent Group 5 meeting held at Mundesley.

At that meeting Mr A Hindley (Past County Chairman) presented a certificate of appreciation for his services as County Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator to Mr Trevor Richardson who has had to relinquish the post due to ill health.

The next Group 5 meeting will be held at Coltishall in the Church Room on Wednesday, 8th October at 2.45.

At the close of last year’s Poppy Appeal the national figure was £21,138,107, slightly down on the previous year. Norfolk’s figure was £287,887 an amazing increase of £15,654 on the previous year!!

Our warmest thanks to our Poppy Appeal Organiser Mrs Kate Lawrance, her hard working collectors and you, the public, for your part in this grand total.

Not only our thanks but also those of the many who were assisted through some of the following:

Pensions Assistance: The Legion processed more than 65% of the new 5,500 claims forwarded to the Veterans Agency, represented 6,900 cases at tribunals, and has more than 43,000 cases ongoing.

Legion Homes: the Legion looked after 400 residents in its care homes and gave 4,200 ex-service people a break in its welfare centres.

Benevolent Work: The Legion was able to answer 300,000 calls for help, provided £22,000 in training grants and approved start-up funding for 70 new businesses.

Next Branch meeting Monday, 8th September, Coltishall Church Room, 7.30
