December 2001 / January 2002

The latest Coltishall Parish Council Meeting was held on Monday 5th November. Fortunately what Mr Fawkes tried to do to the Government all those years ago was not repeated against the Parish Council on this evening, although loud noises and rockets frequently punctuated the proceedings, not necessarily all of which came from outside the meeting.

Perhaps it was the potential danger from such external activities that would explain the non-arrival of the potential new female Parish Councillor and thus this appointment was deferred until a later date.

Planning matters included the application of Caton's Cabs to have a permanent change of use for their office premises. There was general agreement as to the benefit of having a taxi service conveniently situated within the village albeit concern that the limited parking spaces in that area might easily be filled with 'taxis' or that they might be parked in unacceptable areas that could cause a nuisance or obstruction. Time will tell as to whether such concerns are realised or whether the benefits of such a business blend into the needs of the village without any detrimental impact.

There is activity on the tree planting front with our three Tree Wardens involved in the planting of two old varieties of apple in the apple orchard and plans for a Red Oak to be planted somewhere on the common.

Parking for the Fish and Chip shop in the village was an item that raised comments from counsellors and public alike. It would seem that cars are being parked on the pavement and in areas of double yellow lines with disregard to either the legalities or inconvenience being caused. All this despite the availability of a car park across the road from the shop.

Editors Comment (tongue in cheek): Is the answer to plant the Red Oak outside the Fish and Chip shop and settle two problems in one go?

On the matter of traffic there was general concern expressed on the subject of the excessive speed of traffic through the village (see Editorial).

The next meeting will be held on Monday, 7th January 2002.
