December 2001 / January 2002

At the 5th November Coltishall Parish Council bi-monthly meeting, Councillors, along with attending villagers, learnt that there has arisen a need to seek new ways of financing annual grass cutting.

A present Local Council Taxes contribute £500 each year to a total of £1,000. This expenditure is likely to rise to £1,500 per annum with the Parish finding the full amount.

As I understand it, Parishes have a legal responsibility to maintain graveyards in their Parishes. Being a long-standing village person who has numerous deceased relatives interned locally, I have no problems with local funds being used for this purpose.

However, I do wonder what people may feel about St John's and St Theobald's graves being levelled with headstones relocated around the perimeter of the land area.

This change could make the ground easier to manage and possibly look more attractive.

It could be argued that such plans are used by the City of Norwich churches and do look nice.

Readers' views would be welcome. Clearly the current St John's burial ground should remain as it is.
