Lorna and I would like to give our sincere
and heart felt thanks to everybody who played their
part in the joint parishes fete on the Saturday 15th
June. Setting up and running the event took a lot
of hard work from quite a number of people and we
want them to know that their work was much appreciated
and valued.
It is always difficult to know how best to assess
an event like this - why do we do it, what is it for?
How do we judge whether is has been 'successful' or
not?
The prime duty of the Church is to remind everybody
of God's presence among them and to spread the Gospel,
'Good News', of His love for us all as widely as possible.
Of course this is done every weekend in Church during
our services, but such preaching is done to a relatively
small number of people and in relative private. Fetes
and other such community events put on by the Church
have to seen as part of our 'reaching out' to a wider
congregation. At such occasions the preaching is certainly
not so obvious as is a Sermon from the Pulpit, but
nevertheless the same message is there. The message
is also quite clearly that God is not, and cannot
be, limited to the confines of the Sanctuary or the
building itself. Our 'congregation' on the fete day
was enormous and the people who made up that congregation
clearly enjoyed the atmosphere of a 'Good Old Fashioned
Fete'.
That atmosphere was what it is all about for that
atmosphere has its origin and source in the presence
among us of The Holy Spirit. He is at the root of
all that is good, right and uplifting. How better
to summarise our fete?
