July 2002

I think many of us felt the Golden Jubilee celebrations would be very low key. Until quite close to the event few people that I knew seemed to have any particular plans and were just looking forward to one extra days holiday. Well how wrong I was. What a long weekend of celebrations there appeared to be. I do not usually spend much time in front of the television but I really enjoyed all the pageantry of the processions, the concerts, the carnival and the service of thanksgiving. However, nationally we had not finished celebrating because having found the patriotic flags for the jubilee they remained waiving from flag poles, car aerials and bedroom windows for the World Cup matches. It has been great to see our team do so well along with Ireland and other nations that had very long odds at the bookies. Who will win? Well by the time you read this I am sure we will know. I hope it is the team that you have put your bet on.

Our new Treasure Ben Hubbard has been counting the money collected by donations in the little brown envelopes and so far £1,860.39 has been counted. Further envelopes are still being handed in so please let him know if you still have an envelope and want to make a donation. Ben is on 01603 736912 and his address is on the back page.

Please do not forget that the next Marlpit is a double issue. The August/September edition will be out at the end of July so if you are planning an event for September we will need to have the information by 17th July.

Finally during our recent editors meeting we were all really please to hear that Broadland District Council had recommended refusal of permission to Tarmac for gravel extraction at Stanninghall Lane site. Mel Douglass is writing about this in greater detail in this edition. Please read what he has to say and bear in mind that we have been informed that only a few letters of complaint have been received by the District Council on the Tarmac application. Those of us that wrote on the Longwater application for Buxton Road may have felt that we were writing on both accounts but I think we should make really sure before the Tarmac application goes to Norfolk County Council this Autumn. Please do write to the County Council.
