March 2002

Thurning: Plans for a sand and gravel quarry were refused amid concerns it would have an adverse effect on the surrounding countryside. Edgefield Sand and Gravel applied to extract 92,000 tonnes at Rookery Farm every year for 18 years. But the county council planning and highways (regulatory) committee rejected the idea after officers warned it went against development policies and would damage the landscape amenity, wildlife and roads. There were 85 letters of objection from people in Wood Dalling, Thurning and Briston. It also attracted 26 letters of support, most from firms.

Editor: This is a extract from the EDP and shows that public opinion can count against big business.
