Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy based
on the same principles as acupuncture. However, no
needles are used. Instead, pressure is applied, usually
with thumbs. Treatment is deeply relaxing and has
an overall calming effect, so allowing the body's
self-healing processes to work more effectively. Shiatsu
is used to treat a wide range of conditions; let's
look at chronic tiredness as an example.
Before you come for treatment you fill in a detailed
questionnaire. During treatment, to determine the
nature of the tiredness, and thus the method of treatment,
tongue and pulse diagnosis are taken, and even more
detailed questions are asked, for example:
Does the tiredness get worse as the day goes on?
Do you get dizzy?
Is there backache associated with the tiredness? Are
you tired on waking?
Are you tired out with restlessness and agitation?
Does your abdomen feel bloated?
Do your muscles get tired alter exertion? Are you
depressed and irritable?
Do you have blurred vision? Do you have a lot of phlegm?
Chronic tiredness may be a symptom of a serious medical condition. A shiatsu
practitioner should be alert to this and refer you to your doctor for investigation.
In such cases, shiatsu can complement orthodox treatment, and offers a supportive
role.
