May 2003

It is a very busy time for the Players at the moment. We are working hard trying to produce our performances for July. And what a lot there will be for you to enjoy. Hopefully, we will follow on with the success of Confusions last year; by doing four one act plays. So there will be something for everyone!

First there is Costa Del Packet by Anthony Booth. Some of you may recognise the name and yes, we think it is the current Prime Minister’s father-in-law. This is a play for five women and is based in the 1970s. These women decide to go on a package holiday without their husbands, something that was a bit unusual in those days. To say it was a disaster from start to finish would be an understatement. But they are determined to achieve two things. One is to have a good holiday no matter what and the second is probably the most important, not to let their husbands know what a disaster it has been. So prepare yourself for a lot of laughs at their antics.

The next one is much different and the title will give that away straight away. Murder Play written by Brian J Burton is about two couples who have woken up after a dinner party to find one of their group has been murdered. It is a very good play that will keep you guessing right up to the end because things are never quite what they seem.

The next two plays will be totally contrasting as well; they are from a selection of plays by Jean McConnell called Deckchairs. Again these are solely for women and are set as they would

suggest with two women seated in, yes you’ve guessed it, deckchairs. The first is called Dancers and is about two mature ladies who are desperately trying to find men. The trouble is no man seems to want to take them on. Perhaps they are trying a little too hard.

And finally, Early Blight is about an elderly mother and her middle aged daughter. This daughter has stayed to look after her ailing mother. But her mother has a secret and this secret has shattered a very precious dream. Will things ever be the same between them? Well, I’m not going to tell you, you will have to come and watch!

Goodness, I hope we will have time to get all these rehearsed, no doubt Ros Chamberlin and Sue Blackburn (our directors) will be encouraging us to work hard! Now, all you have to do is sit and wait for the tickets to go on sale. I do hope you will be able to contain your excitement. So watch this space and hopefully, by the time the next Marlpit comes out I will have the date that the tickets go on sale.
