| The ‘Milestone Project’
is well underway and members were asked to keep looking for subjects.
Several members had thoroughly enjoyed ‘Holiday on Ice’ at the
Norfolk Showground. The whole performance was very exciting and colourful.
New recruits are needed for the 400 Club draw — there are excellent prizes
to be won.
Our speaker for the evening had a very intriguing title for her talk ‘From
Nun, to Mum, to UNICEF’. As a Nun she was Sister Clare and worked in her
old school as a PE teacher. After l4 years she left the convent and was one half
of the scandal headline - EX-NUN WEDS EX-PRIEST’. Through her work with
the sisterhood and contacts with groups supporting under privileged children she
and her husband were able to adopt twins from Bogota. She has worked tirelessly
as a volunteer with UNICEF to provide health kits for women after childbirth.
All the ladies found her a truly inspirational lady and made us all feel humble
and very grateful for all that we have.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, 21st May and it promises to be very interesting
and with the lighter fine evenings, do come along.

Women’s Institute Meeting, Wednesday, 16th April 2003
We were going to have a talk about Coleman's Mustard but our speakers were
taken ill, so we had a substitute. Mr Clifford Shinn held our meeting enthralled
for about an hour describing his wonderful life from humble farm worker’s
cottage to Manager of the financial world of Harrods.
He transported us from Nineteen Twenties Norfolk through to London and Harrods
in the Thirties and then into the Second World War and his naval career.
He described his further education after the War, returning to Harrods working
in accounts. He served thirty eight years with the company and rose to Manager
and became overall financial controller, handling 3 to 5 million pounds a day.
He started with an accounts office and ended up with a huge banking hall.
I am sure Mr Clifford Shinn gave everyone at this WI meeting a great insight
to a bygone age – it was great!!
