November 2002

The Lions have once again been active, our shop in the precinct is open 6 days a week - this is such a fund raiser for us all, the Manager, Lion Lesley works very hard with her volunteers to provide a super service. We are always looking for helpers in the shop - if you feel you could give a few hours in a friendly fun atmosphere give her a ring on 783737. The draw this month, held for all those who donated items for sale was won by Beryl Cable of Hoveton, we thank her for her donation and have sent a cheque of £100 to her preferred Charity, The Norfolk Autistic Society.

Marshall Schaitel from St Mathew Housing, a charity which provides housing and care for single, lonely, vulnerable people came to the Broads Hotel and gave a talk at our club meeting on the 24th September. He is working hard to raise funds for their new project of 8 flats in Reepham Road in Norwich, the club agreed to help fund the kitchen white goods with a cheque of £1,500. On the 22nd October we hope to have had a visit by Cyril Durrant, a Trustee of the Nancy Oldfield Trust - the club wants to present the Trust with an especially adapted Yeoman sailing boat so that they can provide sailing experiences for blind young people (more news next month).

Special posters around the villages relating to Glaucoma and Diabetes awareness have promoted the Lions Site day. To help some of the youngsters of the community appreciate the need and alert them to the handicap of no sight 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Sea Scouts held a special exercise where they (boys and girls now of course) pitched patrol tents not only in the dark but blindfolded.

We will have our Tombola Team selling tickets at the Wroxham Football Club Fireworks display on Sunday 3rd November. Please come along & spend a pound (instant prizes) which will help this years core Charity - The Air Ambulance, we have sent them £3,500 to date and will double that by the end of the year! The fireworks are good too!! This will be the last Tombola held this year, as most of the prizes have use by dates we donate any not won at this event to St Martins Trust, "The Night Shelter".

There are still some tickets available for the Thursford Spectacular Sunday, 8th December, ring the shop 783737 or call in and see Lion Lesley or Lion Angela.

If you need any information about our activities, help with your charitable causes or help with ours do not be afraid to ask us - we may be able to help.
