The Silent Tribute and Exhortation at
our October meeting were led by the Chairman, Mr Bob
Jennings, who also gave a report on the Group 5 meeting
held a few days earlier at which two retired lady
prison governors (of whom one had been born and brought
up in Mundesley) related some of their experiences
in their prison careers. At that meeting also Mr Jennings
was re-elected as Group representative on the County
Committee and Mr C Smith as Group vice-chairman.
Although our Welfare Secretary is still indisposed
she has made arrangements for the work to continue.
Two requests for assistance have been referred to
the County Field Officer to be deal with. A letter
is being sent to the proprietor of' Top of the Crop
for his help to the Branch's work.
Donations made in lieu of' flowers at Jim Wheeler's
funeral have been used to install a new audio centre
in the lounge at Halsey House (the Legion's residential
home in Cromer). Mrs Betty Wheeler and family would
like to thank all those whose donations made this
possible.
At the end of business Mr Pat Smith MBE showed another
selection from his numerous slides and was thanked
by the Chairman. Our next Branch meeting will be the
Annual General Meeting on Monday 11th November at
7.30 pm in the Coltishall Church Room. Please attend
if possible and others interested are also invited.
Remembrance
Arrangements were made for services etc on Remembrance
Sunday, 10th November.
In the morning our Standards will parade at Buxton.
Wreaths will also be laid at the Horstead War Memorial
10.30 am.
The usual Remembrance Service will be held in Coltishall
Church in the afternoon commencing at 2.45 pm after
which there will be a parade to the War Memorial for
wreath laying. Please walk behind the Band to swell
the parade numbers.
You will need no reminding that an important part
of Remembrancetide is the sale of poppies etc. Our
Poppy Organiser, Mrs Kate Lawrance, and her band of
hard working helpers will be calling on you - please
give them your support. Perhaps you could volunteer
to help with the collecting?
Your generosity last year assisted the Legion to
carry out the following:
Grants made totalled £9.1m. The Legion has
43,000 ongoing war pensions cases and has represented
6,900 cases at tribunals
Over 300,000 welfare visits and requests for assistance
were dealt with.
£300,000 was given in small business loans
and 3,000 people were helped into employment.
10 new taxi drivers are on the road in London though
the Legion's training scheme.
400 residents were looked after and 4,200 ex-service
people were given a break in the Legion's Care Homes,
such as Halsey House.
These are a few of the things you helped to be carried
out. The work is still ongoing so we rely on your
,generosity.
