November 2003

On Tuesday, 23 rd September we visited No 54 Squadron RAF Coltishall to see the daily operational work of the men and women of one of our Jaguar front-line squadrons. Our Chairman, Bob Jennings, conducted the visit and other Legion members of the Korean Veterans Association accompanied us. 16 members were shown the preparations for an operation and the departure and take-off of one aircraft. This was followed by an in-depth brief on the operations of 54 Squadron by one of their Flight Commanders. The Chairman of the Korean Veterans presented a plaque to Wing Commander Neil Connell the Commanding Officer before all members were taken to the Sergeants' Mess for lunch. A very interesting and informative visit to our local airfield to see what our Forces do to help keep the peace.

On Wednesday, 8 th October we hosted the AGM of Group 5's seven branches at the Recruiting Sergeant, Horstead. Our Chairman, Bob Jennings, was re-elected to represent the Group on the County Committee , and our vice-Chairman, Charlie Smith, was re-elected vice-Chairman of the Group.

After the business Mr Ronald Chatten, of North Walsham , spoke about being a member of the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War. He told us of the training involved and of the first ‘drop' behind the German lines in France . Linking up with the Free French Resistance he assisted with the destruction of road and rail junctions etc. He also told us that on occasion it involved having a meal or drink with German soldiers sitting at other tables in the room. Later he was withdrawn from France and dropped behind the Japanese lines in Burma . He was thanked by the Group Chairman, Chris Lloyd.

At our Branch meeting on Monday, 13 th October the Silent Tribute and Exhortation were led by the Chairman, Bob Jennings, who gave a report on the last County Committee meeting and the Group meeting. The recent Legion weekend at the Norton Light Railway, near Snettisham, had raised £3,000.

Members decided to nominate the present Vice-Chairman of the County Committee , Mr G Spalding, as the Chairman-elect.
