• Happy Memories of Miss Dorothy Girling •
November 2003

We were all very sad at Sunday School to hear that Miss Girling had died. We thought of her as one of our special friends. At 101 her enthusiasm for life was quite remarkable. Whenever we invited her to events at Sunday School like Blue Peter Sales, a party in my garden, or to tell us about the days when she was a Sunday School teacher she always said something like ‘I should like that very much'.

We helped her to celebrate her 100 th and her 101 st birthdays at Sunday School and enjoyed drinking her health with blackcurrant juice and sharing a birthday cake with her. On the Monday before she went into hospital she invited me for a cup of tea and when I left she said she would like to fill a Christmas shoe box for a child in Romania , but felt she couldn't quite manage it herself, so she gave me some money to do it for her. It will be a very special box filled at the request of a very special lady. Last Christmas she gave us a book of Bible stories which we use a lot and will always treasure.

I remember when Jill, Laura, Megan, Robert and me went to Miss Girling's house on her 101 st birthday in 2003. The Sunday School made Miss Girling a card and we gave her a some flowers. Her birthday was on April 17 th .

I remember when Miss Girling visited us on the Sunday after her 100 th birthday in 2002. I remember how Iris baked a chocolate cake and how everyone was happy. I remember seeing her congratulation card from the Queen. Miss Girling told us that she had lots and lots of lovely memories but there was one she would never forget. When she was 22 years old she travelled to Norway with one other family member on a steam ship and she told us that she remembered how blue the water was. I remember that Miss Girling was cheerful, happy and always had a lovely story to tell us each time she visited us. I remember Miss Girling as someone who wouldn't let age or any thing else stand in her way.
